Also, because she is an only child, the goddess receives not less honour, but much more still, for Zeus honours her. The son of Kronos did her no wrong nor took anything away of all that was her portion among the former Titan gods : but she holds, as the division was at the first from the beginning, privilege both in earth, and in heaven, and in sea. He does, however, know her as a night-time goddess of witchcraft as demonstrated by the naming of her parents-her father is Perses, "the Destroyer", a name connected with both Persephone the goddess of the underworld and Perseis the mother of the witches Aeetes and Kirke (Circe), while her mother is Asteria, "the Starry One", a goddess of the night. She was usually regarded as the goddess of witchcraft but it is unclear whether Hesiod is actually describing the benefits of magical incantations or simply the results of standard prayers to her divinity. Hesiod attributes a wide range of powers to the goddess Hekate in the following passage.
